My kids are avid readers and we enjoy reading some books before bed to help settle down and spend time together. Here is a list of 5 of my favorite children's books to read to my kids at bedtime that actually help them go to sleep!
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is one of our favorite books because of it's calming tone. This book in particular was my son's absolute favorite when he was a toddler. It's bold blue, yellow, and green pictures and repetitive words help to make my kids sleepy. This is a great book to read when my kids have a hard time settling down before bedtime.
The Going To Bed Book by Sandra Boynton is a cute rhyming story about bedtime routines. Bedtime routines are a great way to help my kids calm down and get ready for sleep. We try our best to stick to our bedtime routine, but remember to give ourselves some grace when we fall off track a little bit.
I Love You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt is another favorite for my kids because it's the perfect snuggle book! This silly story is great to cuddle up with and tell each other how much we love them. My kids love the crazy pictures in this book, too!
Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood is one of my daughter's favorite books! She is a total animal lover, so this book is perfect for her! The calming tone of this story beautifully illustrates how the qualities that make us unique relate to the characteristics of some animals. We enjoy reading this book at bedtime because it sparks imagination, too.
Can't You Sleep, Little Bear? by Martin Waddell is one of my personal favorite bedtime books to read to my kids. My kids have both expressed to me at bedtime that they were afraid of the dark. This book offers a less-scary perspective on this fear by showing the beauty of the moon and stars when it is night time. It's also a lovely reminder for me to spend an extra few minutes snuggling, or reading a book, or giving a warm hug so my kids feel safe going to bed with the "big dark" all around us.
These are some of my favorite books to read to my kids at bedtime because they are engaging, beautifully illustrated, and they help my kids calm down for bedtime. If you don't have a hard copy of these books, you can look for them at your local public library!
